"I'm in the mood for something different," Hank said to Jenny as he scanned the Crazy Rockets Cafe menu. The restaurant was his and Jenny's "place" and they ate there once or twice a week.
"Really?" Jenny raised an manicured eyebrow. Hank ordered a burger and fries every visit. Sometimes, if he was feeling really adventurous he would get a baked potato rather than fries.
A perky, petite waitress appeared at the head of the table. She had a large smile and tiny curls. "Hi, I'm Amanda, I'll be your server tonight. How can I start you off?"
"I'll have a salad and a glass of white wine," Jenny said.
"I'll have a beer and..." Hank scanned the menu. Under the Appetizers header he spotted a large 'NEW' sticker next to an item. "The Super Fresh Calamari," he said.
"Excellent choices," Amanda said, snapping her little notebook closed. Then she and her smile disappeared back into the kitchen.
Both Jenny's eyebrows were raised now. "Do you know what Calamari is?"
"Some sort of fish, right?"
"Close enough."
Amanda soon returned with a small dinner salad and a bowl of what looked like soup, which she set in front of Hank.
Hank looked at Jenny questioningly. "Calamari?"
Jenny looked puzzled. "I've never seen it served like that. Usually it's fried."
Henry swirled the top with his soup with his spoon and leaned over to smell the aroma.
Ten tentacles sprang from the bowl, the suckers latching onto Hank's face and dragging him down.
Hank pulled back, but the tentacles were surprisingly strong, holding him now. His nose drew closer and closer to the murky surface. A black eye stared up at him and a parrot-like beak snapped open and shut in anticipation.
Wrenching and twisting with all his might, Hank broke free of the tentacles' grip. He began beating the tentacles with his spoon. Broth spattered into the air. Eventually the flailing tentacles stopped moving and a thin, grey body floated to the top like a wrecked submarine.
Jenny wiped a spot of broth from her cheek. "That really was Super Fresh, wasn't it?"
